May 10. 2014 (Revolution News) – From
Washington DC to Toronto, Melbourne, London, Oslo and Johannesburg,
demonstrations worldwide were held in over 30 cities demanding justice
for students and residents massacred across Oromia region by Ethiopia’s
TPLF army and police.
On Tuesday 29 April, an estimated 25,000 people,
including residents of Ambo town in central Oromia, participated in a
city wide demonstration, in the largest show of opposition to the
government’s plans to date.
Ethiopian security forces opened fire on Oromo students at
Jimma, Haromaya, Ambo, Wollega, Bule Hora, Madawalabu, Metu, Adama and
Dire Dawa universities during peaceful protests killing at least
47 protesters, sources said. Thousands of students at all eight regional
universities in Oromia, the largest of Ethiopia’s federal
states, protested to demand an immediate halt to the city’s so-called
“Integrated Development Master Plan,” unveiled earlier this month.
Oromo students and the wider
community believe the plan is to displace farmers in the outskirts and
suburban areas of the city, to meet the growing demand for land will
weaken the Oromo identity.
May 9th’s solidarity demonstrations aimed at condemning the
weeks-long killings, injuries, detentions of Oromo students (oft under
ages) and members of the general public by Ethiopia military and federal
police. From slogans commonly carried and heard at worldwide rallies
and letters submitted to members of the governments of the cities and
countries mentioned, it was clear that the Oromo diaspora was not only
opposed to the killings, but it was also outraged by the silence of
donor governments to Ethiopia on the ongoing ethnic-cleansing targeting
members of the Oromo nationality.Chanting with anti-Ethiopian regime slogans, carrying signs and waving flags that represent the Independence of Oromia and Ogadenia states, a joint protests by the Oromo and Ogaden communities has been underway in Australia.
The Ogaden Communities that joined with the Oromo Communities in their protests against the Ethiopian government’s killing of dozens of Oromo students spent several-hours of marching in front of the Parliament of Victoria up to federation square, the very center of Melbourne down-town, Ogaden News Agency reports.
The protesters submitted petitions requesting the Australian government to stop giving assistance to Ethiopian government when it uses the assistance as a political weapon to suppress the free press and human rights of its civilians.
