Human Rights Violations In Ethiopia – Oromo Rally In Denver |
DENVER May 9, 2014 – An Oromo community rallies at the Colorado State
Capitol to raise awareness for the recent clashes between the Ethiopian
government military and Oromo students. Ethiopian students from
universities, colleges, and high schools organized peaceful protests
against Addis Ababa’s proposed
Master Plan that
will displace thousands of Oromo families and farmers by selling the
land to foreign investors for development. The military brutality led to
over 80 deaths and hundreds of injuries in several cities in Oromo
regions.
“We are urging the United States government to be a little bit more
proactive to open up the political system to make the system as
inclusive as possible so that multiple voices can be heard within the
political process and a peaceful solution can be found,” he said.
Protestors hope to secure humanitarian intervention to the Oromo
regions where the military is crushing civilian resistance towards land
grabbing.
